Why Summerlin's Villages Never Shared One Theme
THE NAMES WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO MATCH
Summerlin's map looks like the naming committee changed themes every time they met: The Pueblo, The Trails, The Crossing, The Canyons, The Arbors, The Vistas. It turns out that may be the point.
In a 2015 UNLV oral-history interview, longtime Summerlin president Kevin Orrock explained that every village was intended to be diverse and to have its own uniqueness. One matching theme across the entire community would have worked against the plan. The villages were supposed to feel like distinct places inside a development covering nearly 36 square miles.
The names often preview the place planners built. The Pueblo opened with Pueblo-style architecture and a long desert park. The Trails came with a community center, parks, and paseos. The Arbors grew around parks called Tree Top and Cottonwood Canyon. The Vistas got 48-foot clock towers; The Ridges sits against the protected western edge and a golf course.
The surviving public record still does not identify who proposed each word or why one name beat another. What the record does answer is why the names refuse to line up: sameness was never the assignment.
Summerlin itself has the family name of Howard Hughes' grandmother. The villages underneath it were built to have personalities of their own. Which one actually lives up to its name?
