North of Aliante, the desert is hiding a wetland's worth of bones. Tule Springs Fossil Beds preserves the remains of a Las Vegas that had springs, shallow water, and animals far larger than anything likely to wander through the neighborhood today.

The national monument covers almost 23,000 acres along the valley's northern edge. Its fossil record includes mammoths, ancient camels, horses, bison, dire wolves, saber-toothed cats, American lions, and giant ground sloths. Most of the fossils date from about 100,000 to 12,500 years ago, when this valley was cooler and much wetter.

The famous Big Dig of 1962 and 1963 was looking for evidence that early humans lived alongside those Ice Age animals. The excavators found human artifacts, but in younger layers than the mammoth bones. That means the dig did not prove humans and mammoths lived here at the same time. It did establish how much the fossil beds could tell us about the ancient wetlands.
