Good morning, Las Vegas. It’s National Donald Duck Day. 92 years ago today, a furious garbling Donald Fauntleroy Duck made his screen debut in The Wise Little Hen. Sticklers will note that the first screening was a May 3 charity benefit but Disney stamped it June 9 and we’re not about to argue with the Mouse. I bet you didn’t know that short-tempered duck has appeared in more Disney films than any character in the catalog, including Mickey.

Red Rock Rumbles
Last week some of you might have felt a 3.8 magnitude earthquake around the Red Rock area. Native Nevadans will know that these occurences are not uncommon, but rarely anything to worry about, so let’s dive in to why.
Last week’s earthquake was centered about 11 kilometers northwest of Summerlin South and roughly 7 kilometers underground. That is shallow; earthquakes less than about 70 kilometers deep fall into that category, and shallow shaking can feel surprisingly sharp near the epicenter which explains why those near Red Rock felt it, but if you are in Skye Canyon probably not.
For perspective, a magnitude 3 often feels like a quick jolt or passing truck. A 4 is more obvious: windows and dishes may rattle, and most people nearby notice it. A 5 can knock items from shelves and cause minor damage. Each whole-number increase represents an exponential release in energy.
Maps show the Las Vegas Valley fault system through the central basin, the Frenchman Mountain system to the east, and numerous individual fault traces. Nevada is commonly ranked behind only Alaska and California for seismic activity, but most Nevada earthquakes are small, remote, or never felt. Southern Nevada can seem quiet for long stretches. That does not mean the ground is inactive; it means most movement happens without making the morning group chat.

In other news. . .
🍟 In-n-out Opens: The second largest In-n-out in the world is opening today, June 9th. The BLVD Complex operation made the announcement just 24 hours ago, likely because if we were given any more of a heads up the line would span all of the Strip.
🗳️Primary Election Day: Clark County vote centers are open Tuesday, June 9, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters may use any Election Day Vote Center, register or update eligible information the same day, and drop off mail ballots.
🍽️ Restaurant Week: Las Vegas Restaurant Week runs through Friday, June 12, with prix fixe menus benefiting Three Square Food Bank. The event has helped provide more than 10 million meals since 2007.
⚾ Trademark drama: The Athletics have secured their name in three cities over more than 120 years, but "Las Vegas Athletics" was initially deemed too generic. This week’s run of home games hopefully give the club a chance to stand out enough to secure the trademark.
🏒 Knights take Game 3: The Vegas Golden Knights lead the Stanley Cup Final 2-1 after a 5-4 double-overtime thriller. Mitch Marner recorded the fastest hat trick in Final history before Vegas surrendered three historically quick goals of its own. It was chaotic, but it was a win. Game 4 is tonight.
