Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

In the Northwest:

The Las Vegas Aviators become their alter ego, Reyes de Platas as they face off against the St. Paul Saints. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.

Sur La Table invites you to join their hands-on cooking class where you’ll be making carne asada, balckened fish tacos, corn tortillas, Mexican street corn all followed by a nice dessert of a tequila-lime sorbet. Tickets are $89.

Nickel beer, mariachi music and more! Hussong’s Mexican Cantina is having an all day celebration with $5 margs, giveaways, and 2 for $6 street tacos. The real fun starts at 5 when mariachis will start performing and the nickel beer promo begins. Stick around until 6 to take part in the piñata contest.

Get your passport ready with La Neta Cocina y Lounge. Upon arrival you’ll receive a passport where you collect stamps by ordering tacos, margs, or shots. Three stamps nets you a free shot or dessert, while a full passport enters you to win a $150 La Neta gift card.

Around the Valley

HISTORY LESSON

Nevada’s Rich Mexican Heritage

With this special edition of the digest we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, marking the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. If you were thinking it was Mexican Independence you’ll have to wait until September 16th.

While you may think of it as just another holiday that we celebrate for the sake of it Nevada has a rich Mexican and Spanish heritage. Before becoming an U.S. territory the entirety of present-day Nevada was part of Mexican territory until it was transferred as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.

Native tribes have occupied the area we call Las Vegas for thousands of years, but the first non-native to be credited with traversing the valley was Rafael Rivera, a Mexican Scout. Las Vegas’ name itself translates to “The Meadows.” While the city masks the reason for this, it’s a reminder that the valley was once known for its many springs providing refuge for the people and animals amid a sparse desert landscape.

Today, the rich culture of Mexican and the broader Latino cultures is deeply ingrained in the culture of Las Vegas. We see this in our street names, the small businesses in our communities, our food, our workforce, and our neighbors!
