Good morning, Las Vegas. The National Weather Service has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect, with westside highs around 103 to 104 through Thursday. The useful plans this week start early, stay indoors, or wait for the sun to ease up.

In today's Northwest Digest:

  • Free Tuesday music

  • Healthcare hiring

  • Thursday wildlife

Let's get to it.

Want a free shade tree? Start with this list

After a week of 104-degree afternoons, a free shade tree sounds less like landscaping and more like equipment. Clark County's Community Canopy program has distributed 4,500 trees since fall 2024, and the county says another round is planned for this fall.

The catch is timing. Orders are not open yet. The current Stay Cool Clark County page is collecting email sign-ups for program updates, so that is the useful step now. Last spring, the county offered 2,300 drought-resilient peach redskin, Chinese pistache and Shumard oak trees. A dozen heat-vulnerable ZIP codes got first access before the program opened countywide. None of those initial ZIP codes was in the northwest, but northwest residents could order once the countywide window began.

Do not assume fall will use the same ZIP list, tree choices or schedule. Subscribe, then read the new rules when they arrive. Meanwhile, choose a realistic planting spot, ideally one that can shade a west-facing wall or window without crowding the roof, block wall or irrigation.

Where would one more shade tree make the biggest difference at your place?
